Hexplorer is an all-in-one toolkit for hex-based exploration, equipped with features such as hex-based fog of war, customizable colored zones, time advancement mechanics, table rolling, and more. It also supports square grids.

    How to Use

    Setting Up Hexplorer

    1. Create a new scene or select an existing one. Hexplorer supports both hex and square grids.

    2. Navigate to the scene settings and locate the "Basic" tab, scroll to the bottom and enable the "Hexplorer" option.

    3. In the "Grid" tab, make sure your grid distance and units are correctly set as they will be used by explorer for time advancement calculations.

    4. Select or place a token on the scene, open the token settings and check the "Is Hexplorer?" box, set an exploration radius and speed for the token.

    5. On your scene controls (left side buttons toolbar), you will have a new compass icon, click it to open the Hexplorer configuration window.

    6. Without a brush selected, left click on a cell to configure it. You can then save it's configuration as a brush using the "Save Brush" button.

    7. Click on a brush to select it, click again to deselect it. Click and drag on the scene to paint using the selected brush.

    Exploring

    1. Make sure you have an hexplorer token selected.

    2. Move the token normally.

    3. Confirm the movement by clicking the button in the chat message created by Hexplorer.

How to setup Fog of War image

    ℹ️

Note that there is no reason to have vision enabled on the scene unless you want to use a fog of war image as it will only increase performance overhead with no benefit.

Hexplorer does not have a fog of war image feature, instead you can use the one built in into foundry vtt. Hexplorer will mask the fog of war appropriatelly with what you have explored.

    • Open the scene settings and navigate to the "Lighting" tab and set a Fog of War Image.
    • Make sure Token Vision is enabled in the scene settings.
    • Make sure Fog Exploration is disabled in the scene settings.
    • Make sure Global Illumination is disabled in the scene settings.
    • Make sure your padding is set to 0 or the images will not allign properly.
    • Make sure your Hexplorer token has Vision enabled and it's regular vision radius is set to 0.

    Explored vs Discovered

A cell is considered explored when there is vision of the cell.

A cell is considered discovered when an hexplorer token has traversed or ended movement on the cell.
